Gaza Strip fuel shortage forces power shutdown

Palestinian energy officials say fuel shortages have forced them to shut down the Gaza Strip's lone power plant, causing blackouts in the already impoverished territory.

Gaza's energy authority has until recently relied on fuel smuggled from Egypt to circumvent an Israeli blockade. But shortages in Egypt have halted the smuggling.

Gaza's power plant director Walid Saad Sayel said Wednesday he placed some blame for the crisis on infighting with the rival Palestinian government in the West Bank.

Up to 10 months to remove capsized cruise ship

The cruise ship that capsized off Italy's coast will take up to 10 months to remove, officials said Sunday, as rough seas off the Tuscan coast forced the suspension of recovery operations.

Officials called off both the start of operations to remove of 500,000 gallons of fuel and the search for people still missing after determining the Costa Concordia had moved four centimeters (an inch and a half) over six hours, coupled with waves of more than one meter (three feet).

A 17th body, identified as Peruvian crew member Erika Soria Molina, was found Saturday. Sixteen crew and passengers remain listed as missing, with one body recovered from the ship not yet identified.

Fuel begins arriving at frozen Alaska city

Crews on Monday began transferring 1.3 million gallons of fuel from a Russian tanker to the iced-in western Alaska city of Nome.

Stacey Smith of Vitus Marine, the fuel supplier that arranged to have the Russian tanker Renda and its crew deliver the fuel, said the offloading began around sunset Monday.

Crews had laid two hoses for the transfer along a stretch of Bering Sea ice. The hoses are hooked to a shore-side pipeline leading to storage tanks in town.

Environmental fears mount in Italian cruise wreck

Italy's cruise liner tragedy turned into an environmental crisis Monday, as rough seas battering the stricken mega-ship raised fears that fuel might leak into pristine waters off Tuscany that are part of a protected sanctuary for dolphins, porpoises and whales.

The ship's jailed captain, meanwhile, lost the support of the vessel's Italian owner as he battled prosecutors' claims that he caused the deadly wreck that killed at least six and left 29 missing.

Earlier, authorities had said 16 people were missing. But an Italian Coast Guard official, Marco Brusco, said late Monday that 25 passengers and four crew members were unaccounted for three days after the disaster. He didn't explain the jump, but indicated 10 of the missing are Germans. Two Americans are also among the missing.
