Stearns trails in Florida primary results

Office of Cliff Stearns

Rep. Cliff Stearns, the Florida Republican who led the House Energy and Commerce Committee investigation into the failure of the federally backed Solyndra solar company, is on the verge of defeat as he trails a Tea Party candidate after a hard-fought primary in a newly drawn district.

Stearns trailed political newcomer Ted Yoho, a veterinarian, in a four-way primary by less than 900 votes in complete but unofficial results.

The Associated Press, however, hasn't called the race since provisional and late overseas ballots could cut into Yoho's lead. Provisional and overseas ballots typically make up 3 to 5 percent of the overall vote. A 12-term lawmaker, Stearns also had not concede defeat as of early Wednesday morning.
