Guyana bans gold, diamond mining in rivers

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) — The South American country of Guyana has indefinitely banned all diamond and gold mining in rivers because of pollution, loose regulations and other concerns.
Natural Resources Minister Robert Persaud says the government will take stock of the damage done so far. He said Friday that river banks have been damaged, several species of fish are dying and that large trees have fallen and blocked channels.
