BERLIN (AP) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday defended her government's decision to phase out nuclear power and switch to renewable energies within a decade, but acknowledged the need to overhaul and speed up the transition plan.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Prairie Island Indian Community detailing its collaboration in reviewing the potential environmental impacts of renewing the on-site storage facility license at the Prairie Island nuclear plant.

Stimulus-paid nuclear waste cleanup not fully documented, GAO finds

The Energy Department has failed to fully show that $6 billion in economic stimulus money spent to clean up government-owned nuclear and chemical waste sites has met performance goals, the Government Accountability Office said Monday.

In a report mandated by Congress, the GAO said that past project management problems it has seen in the department's work to clean up Cold War hazardous waste sites cropped up again in the stimulus spending by the Office of Environmental Management.
